IPhD - Integrated Photonics Devices

About Us

The iPhD – Integrated Photonics Devices is a Thematic Project funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) that gathers researchers from the University of Campinas (Unicamp) and from the Mackenzie Presbyterian University in order to:

Investigate linear and nonlinear phenomena in micronano-optical cavities and waveguides

Understand the limiting effects of each material

Create breakthrough applied and fundamental knowledge and solutions for Integrated Photonics Devices

Understand the interaction between matter and light, including spontaneous and stimulated emission and the coupling between light, matter, and mechanical degrees of freedom in these structures

Understand the coupling between different platforms for photonic integration, and by taking advantage of the new material properties and the achieved new general understanding

The research group is mostly based in Brazil in the cities of
Campinas (State of Sao Paulo) and São Paulo (capital of the State)

The Gleb Wataghin Institute of Physics (IFGW) and the School of Engineering of Campinas (FEEC) state of the art research contribute to place the University of Campinas as one of the three best universities in Latin America and one of the top 100 universities in emerging economies. Unicamp is one public and tuition free university with 6 campuses in the cities of Campinas (major campus), Limeira, Paulínia and Piracicaba.

The IFGW is located in Campinas and is known to be where the first semiconductor crystals and the first solar cells were produced in Latin America (in the 70s and the 80s respectively). Its research related to optical fibers also influenced the creation of several technology based companies in the city of Campinas and contributed greatly to the city becoming a high technology center.

Also located in the campus of Campinas, the FEEC has been highlighted as the Unicamp Unit most active in the interaction with the business sector, covering the licensing of technologies and research projects sponsored by industry. The knowledge produced by FEEC academics and students impact in the creation of new technologies and new business not only in Brazil, but present in many important global economies as several alumni have started companies which are spread all over the world.

The Mackenzie Presbyterian University is a non-profit educational and educational institution, which has units in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília and Palmas. Mackenzie is known as one of the most credible private universities in Brazil. Currently, the creation of the MackGraphe has led Mackenzie to be highlighted in the research scenario in Brazil.

MackGraphe is the first Advanced Research Center in Graphene, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies, focused on research on two-dimensional materials in Latin America, MackGraphe is also the first private center  in graphene research in Latin America.
